The Patriotic Vanguard Bereaved

Sekou Dauda Bangura

One of the most loyal and hardworking correspondents of this newspaper, based in New Jersey, passed away yesterday, sending shock waves among journalists and APC activists in North America and beyond.

Here is what PV publisher Gibril Gbanabome Koroma has to say about the terrible news:

When Cocorioko publisher Kabs-Kanu called me at work and left a message on my cell phone saying Sekou Dauda was dead I thought it was an April Fool kind of thing until I realized we were not yet in April.Sekou is the kind of person you will not expect to die at this time.

He said the last time he spoke to Sekou, a few weeks ago, the late man said he had been sick with the flu and was having problems getting back to work but there was nothing to worry about.

We had a brief chat and I wished him a speedy recovery and said good bye. I did not know it was a real good bye, that I will never talk to him again or see him. We have never met face to face and I planned to visit New Jersey this year and meet him for the first time. When I got home yesterday I could not do anything but went straight to bed. I am still trying to recover from the shock and trauma, Gbanabome said.

He added that Sekou was one of the most patriotic Sierra Leoneans he had ever known. He said Sekou was always sending in news about weddings and funerals and other community activities in New Jersey. He also loved to write about his home district of Port Loko and Port Loko politicians.

Sekou was selfless, a nice man and a great Sierra Leonean who never said a bad thing about anybody, always suggesting patience and loyalty in whatever activity one is involved. May his soul rest in perfect peace. I am also sending condolences to members of his family in New Jersey, who I will soon contact, publisher Gbanabome said.

The late Sekou Dauda Bangura attended the Albert Academy in Freetown and Fourah Bay College where he read English, History and Education. He taught English at the Ahmadiyya secondary school in Freetown for a couple of years before leaving for the United States where he did post-graduate work in Communications.

Also, our new correspondent in Freetown, Emmanuel Aiah Senessie, lost his sister Mrs. Doris Lebbie, on Wednesday. We will bring you more details about that sad occurrence later.
