Sierra Leones Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. Samura Kamara on Tuesday 19th March 2013, officially launched the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI) Report of 2013. The report was launched in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at Parliamentary Hall of Parliament in Freetown.

In her statement, UNDP Country Director, Madam Mia Seppo said since 1990, the annual HDI report published by UNDP has explored challenges that confronted the world in the development of the human race in various countries.

Among these challenges she stated, were inequality, poverty, globalization, water scarcity, migration and climate change, among others.

Among the countries that made the greatest strides in the Human Development Index improvement since 2000 is Sierra Leone being the second highest in the world, said Madam Seppo.

The UNDP in-country boss said the current Report was an indication that Sierra Leone was making progress.

The Government Spokesman who doubles as the Communication and Information Minister, Alhaji Alpha Kanu in his statement said it was imperative for every Sierra Leonean to praise himself for upwards projecting the country is making rapidly in terms of human developments. He maintained that, infrastructural development, road construction, the influx of investors, improvement in healthcare facilities, agriculture and many other projects that are implemented by the government of Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma are some of the factors that have graded Sierra Leone to such a level that brings global admiration in the UNDP Human Development Index.

Hon. Alpha Kanu reminded of how the country ranked last position when the APC Government took over in 2007 but in just five years of the leadership of His Excellency the President, Sierra Leone had jumped up over and above ten countries in the ranking at the highest rate of human development in Africa and second highest in the world.
