In Sierra Leone, Over 300 Residents Rendered Homeless in Kailahun

Very heavy storm that occurred on Tuesday 16th April 2012, left over three hundred residents in the Segbwema and Mendekelema in the Njaluahun Chiefdom, Kailahun district homeless. According to reports, the storm also left over fifty houses, including schools and health centres unroofed and destroyed.

At a press briefing held in Freetown on Thursday 18th April 2013 by the former Hon. Member of Parliament for Constituency 07, Hon.  Robin Farley, he said women, children and elderly victims of the disaster are currently in despair. He disclosed further that the situation is very pathetic and unfortunate, especially for post war communities that faced perpetual destructions during the country's decade long civil war.

He expressed sympathy that most of the current victims are among those victims that recently constructed or rehabilitated their houses after they were destroyed by fire that broke out some few months ago in the same communities.

Hon. Farley went on that the victims are frustrated and disappointed, and are in dire need of help from kind humanitarian organizations, government or individual philanthropists.

He said the situation has increased on the level of poverty of the residents and that it has also resulted in the loss of properties worth millions of leones.

One of the victims of the disaster, Kelfala Kallon told this reporter that most of them are currently dwelling in verandas and makeshift structures with their families.

Kelfala Kallon used the forum to plead for support from government ministries, departments and agencies, humanitarian institutions and individuals before the next rain falls.
