Residents of Kenema city on the eve of independence 26th April 2013 were all in jubilation, chanting loud songs of praises for President Koroma and the All Peoples Congress (APC) party after the first set of solar street lights installed recently in the city was all switched on.

Major offices and institutions within the city of Kenema including the police station, city council office, the government hospital and other major street in the city are now enjoying uninterrupted solar electricity supply.

The Resident Minister East, Mr. William Juana Smith in an exclusive interview with this reporter said this is just one of the development plans of the APC government for the people of Sierra Leone, adding that there are more developments under President Koromaís Agenda for Prosperity.

He said the solar street lights when fully installed, will help to beatify the city of Kenema and will also help to reduce crime rates in most isolated areas where crime rates are most common. According to him, the APC government has stated the project long since and that some district headquarters are now fully enjoying the facility of walking along brightly lit streets in the night. He cited Pujehun district among the areas that have since early this year, benefited from the solar street lights project.

Councilor Anthony Fonnie in charge of Energy issues at the Kenema City Council told Awareness Times that Kenema city will have a total of nine hundred solar street lights installed with the project slated to be completed within a period of two months.

Although he was elected under the opposition SLPP, he readily accepted that under President Ernest Koromaís Agenda for Prosperity, the Kenema City Council is expected to benefit from more facilities, adding that the solar street lights installation project is just one of such beneficiary projects for the district.
