Africell Lintel Limited Sierra Leone, in collaboration with the United States of America Embassy in Sierra Leone on Tuesday 30th April 2013 launched the Africell American Corner at the companys Bathurst Street Office in Freetown.

The Africell American Corner will give the general public a comfortable place to read good books, study quietly and carryout uninterrupted research on the internet.

Africells Managing Director (MD), Mr. Shadi Gerjawi, on behalf of his company expressed delight to partner with the US Embassy in Sierra Leone to establish the resource centre in Sierra Leone. He said every nations value is driven by the quality of its human resources and a major tool in building high quality and relevant education.

The MD informed that membership of the Corner will be free and open to the public during regular business hours on Monday through Saturday, adding that this is another of Africells commitment to the socio-economic development of Sierra Leone.

According to Mr. Gerjawi, since commencing operations in Sierra Leone in 2005, Africell has led the way in demonstrating exemplary corporate social responsibility, the effect of which he went on, can be felt in major sectors of the economy.

Mr. Gerjawi said that the companys continued support for education in the country has been enormous, through the provision of scholarships to various students nationwide and other related educational activities.

One of such recent success stories the MD revealed, is the companys support to the youngest innovator yet in Sierra Leone, the 16 years old Kelvin Doe who became the youngest visiting practitioner to MIT and has been a guest of the President of Harvard University in the USA.

He expressed hope that the Corner will become the breeding ground for the mental and technical development of youths in the country.

Ambassador of the United States of America to Sierra Leone, Michael S. Owen said the American Corners are partnerships between the Public Affairs Sections of the US Embassy and host institutions. He said the Corners are spaces for information, conversation and engagement.

The Ambassador said the multi-media tools, books and periodical collections and programs at American Corners are open and accessible to the public, adding that they are made available because the embassy believes that having access to these resources and encouraging literacy among every member of the community can provide for better futures.

He expressed hope that the people of Sierra Leone will see these materials useful, adding that the Corner will in the future be used to share US traditions of celebrating Americas July 4th Independence Anniversary, Black History Month and various other special events throughout the year.

The Corner according to Ambassador Owen, offers a welcoming environment where visitors can connect with and learn about the US, hear from US government officials and meet other Americans who can talk about US policy and society.

Ambassador Owen said the opening of the Corner is significant as it stands as the first public-private partnership for an America Corner in Sierra Leone, whilst thanking management and staff of Africell for believing and supporting the project.

The good ambassador ended by expressing his embassys commitment to foster and promote development of youths in Sierra Leone.

The occassion ended on a high note.
