Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen:An Excellent U.N. Diplomat !
It is no longer a secret that there is an issue at the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone bordering around the staff draw-down process; for which two of the local newspapers have been taking digs at the person of the Executive Representative of the United Nations Secretary General to Sierra Leone, Mr. Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen. Some have even called for the Government to interfere within operational draw-down at UNIPSIL.

Well, the firm position of this newspaper is that the draw-down process at UNIPSIL should be allowed to be carried out without any form of interference from the Sierra Leone Government!

It is hoped by this press-house that members of executive arm of Government will realise that any overt or covert actions of theirs which might be construed as interference in the operations of the UN Mission in-country, will only lend credence to the false assertion by the disgraced Michael v.d. Schulenburg that Sierra Leone under President Koroma, interferes in United Nations operations. That will definitely be most unfair to the President.

As recently stated by the Special Executive Assistant to the President, the buck stops on the Presidents desk in the running of this country. When the disgraced Micheal Schulenburg went on a rabid mission to denigrate our country in the international media, it was our President who bore sting of Schulenburgs unwarranted and outright lies. No other member of the Executive was blamed except our President.

Now, what is our opinion on the current ERSG? Well, it is now exactly one year since Mr. Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen was named as the new ERSG and we, as a newspaper, have been quietly observing his activities without him knowing we have been doing this. We have utilised our sources within and without UNIPSIL to come to a firm conclusion about Mr. Toyberg-Frandzen.

It can be easily recalled that this newspaper has been at the forefront of sometimes-intense exposures of the inadequacies of past ERSGs and we believe we are more than qualified to be able to analyse and publicise if an ERSGs presence and his actions are positive or negative for Sierra Leone.

When Mr. Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen was first announced, his boss, the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, described him as well qualified to support the efforts of Sierra Leone in achieving its peacebuilding & development priorities.

This newspaper can today say the current ERSG has proven himself to be more than well qualified for the position he was sent to fill in Sierra Leone. He has quietly stayed in the background like a quintessential diplomat but even so, he has effectively ensured the mandate of the United Nations in Sierra Leone comes about.

Mr. Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen has not engaged himself in fighting dog-fights in the media neither has he employed the services of media  rascalpions to defend himself when he has been, in our opinion, most unfairly attacked in the media.

Post-war Sierra Leone is an interesting place and foreigners, especially diplomats, can find themselves caught up in a maze which many of them do not understand until they find themselves unceremoniously removed from this place. In the case of the current ERSG, we see in him, a man who has been able to utilise his years of diplomatic experience to diplomatically manoeuvre within the maze and tangled web known as Sierra Leone.

As far as we are concerned, Mr. Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen is one of the finest ever diplomats to grace this country and we wish him well. He is a diplomat per excellence! Indeed, we raise our hats to this fine diplomat who has represented UN so well here.
