APC-led government of President Koroma is currently facing crisis of perceived skyrocketing corruption. Reports of billions of leones recently corruptly swindled from NRA and Banking sector have been compounded by a report released from Transparency International (T.I.) yesterday July 9th 2013 which reveals Sierra Leone is the worst place in the world in terms of bribery giving.
84% of Sierra Leoneans interviewed by T.I., accepted that they give bribes; compared to 27% global average. Report of Ďlast placeí caused uproar with Sierra Leoneans. On Facebook and other social media, many insisted it was an indictment on the government of the day.
However, Dr. Sylvia Blyden, Special Executive Assistant to the President at State House, told this paper that Ďlast positioní was not to be seen as being against the APC-led government but against everyone in the country.
ďSierra Leone scored last position in the segment of response by its citizens as to if they give bribes. This means all the citizens are being indicted by T.I. for readily giving out bribes. We all have to examine ourselves as to why with a strong Anti Corruption Commission available at our disposal, we prefer to continue to give bribes than complain the takers of bribes to ACC,Ē Dr. Blyden said last night.
