RUFP to Hold Convention in November

The Leader of the Revolutionary United Front Party (RUFP), Eldred Collins and the Chairman of the Party Ansumana Fowai has informed the Chairman of the Political Parties Registration Commission (PPRC), Hon Justice M.E. Tolla Thompson that plans are on the way for the conduct of their Annual Party Conference at the end of November 2013. This disclosure was made at a meeting between a cross-section of the party and the executive, held at the PPRC Headquarters in Freetown.The Party members reached a consensus to drop their allegations, after the Leader, the Chairman and the Executive gave a report on how they spent the money given to the party by President Goodluck Jonathan as support to Political Parties in Sierra Leone.

 

GEKO Ends Village Savings and Loan Associations Training

A two-day workshop for 142 participants drawn from five Associations in Maforki chiefdom has ended in Port Loko town. It was organised by GEKO-SL with funds from UNICEF. In his opening statement, the Program Manager for GEKO-SL, John Tholley welcomed all present and emphasized on the importance of such training which includes among other things, ensuring that the VS&L methodology will help to rehabilitate and sustain the functioning of hand pumps without donor support and also to scale-up and sustain sanitation services in their communities.

 

Government Impressed with Africa Link Scheme

Africa Link a Destination Inspection Company has commenced a week-long training on customs modernization and valuation held at the Bintumani Conference Hall. In his keynote address, Chief Director and Professional Head in the Ministry of Trade, Ahmed Akar Ahmed said destination inspection in developing countries is anchored on the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Africa Link has come to replace pre-shipment inspection. He said only a year when the Company started its scheme in the country, the government has rated its performance as very good and they have seen positive results.

 

Irish Embassy Launches Scholarship Programme

As part of commitment to promote and upgrade the educational background of staff of its working partners in Sierra Leone, the Embassy of Ireland and Irish Aid has launched the Irish Aid Training Fellowship programme on scholarships for Sierra Leonean students at the Embassys compound off Spur Road. The programme was attended by representatives of the implementing partners of both the Embassy and Irish Aid. According to the Head of Mission at the Irish Embassy, Sinead Walsh, they are pleased and happy to launch the scholarship programme in the country as a way of empowering Sierra Leoneans who intend to further their education at Masters Level in Ireland.

 

10 Grafton FAWE Pupils Get Support

As a means of repaying back to her fathers land and to promote girl child education in the country, a lost Sierra Leonean who was able to trace her relatives back home has donated school items and scholarship to 10 Grafton FAWE Junior Secondary School pupils through the National Coordinator of Forum for African Women Educationalist, Madam Eileen Hanciles, at the School compound.

 

NEC Survey Shows More Women Votes than Men in 2012

The National Electoral Commissions (NEC) recent research on the 2012 multi-tier elections has revealed that more women voted in that exercise than men. This was disclosed by the Chief Electoral Commissioner and National Returning Officer, Christiana Thorpe during the official launching of the Gender and Disability Unit of the NEC recently. According to her, the Commission undertook the research at the close of the last election, in order to assess female participation in the countrys election.

 

Domestic Violence on the Increase in Kenema

A Non Commissioned Officer (NCO)-Crime attached to the Family Support Unit (FSU) of the Kenema Police Division has expressed dismay over the hike in domestic violence especially of assaults taking place in private homes in Kenema District. Mustapha D. Konneh reveals that between 1st to 27th October this year, the unit has recorded over twenty cases of domestic violence, eight of which have been charged to court whilst the remainder are still been investigated by police. The FSU Crime Officer went on to unearth his units plans to embark on massive sensitization campaigns to include door-to-door visitations within the Kenema city community.
