When Despots take over the Media

Despotic members of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) are grossly abusing their  rights; so as to hack out revenge on the Sierra Leone Bar Association for the recent press release of the Bar that refused to condemn the ongoing use of seditious libel laws. However, by taking revenge, they have resorted to LIES and to rather maliciously over-blowing reports to mammoth proportions!

And by so doing, the vengeful journalists are simply justifying concerns raised by the Bar Association.

No lawyer slapped any magistrate this week. No lawyer was physically violent against any official in court but if you listen to the radio and read journalists updates, they want the world to believe that a lawyer, Pious Sesay, spent the night in police custody at the CID because he slapped a magistrate. Indeed Lawyer Sesay was questioned for alleged insulting language whilst he protested a ruling against his client by a young magistrate. The magistrate and senior judicial authorities did not take kindly to his utterances. They reported him to the police who questioned him, granted him bail and handed him over to Bar Association president, Elvis Kargbo.

Yes, Lawyer Pious Sesay had no right to publicly humiliate the Magistrate with demeaning allegations like allegedly saying he helped pay the magistrates schooling fees but it is totally untrue that he slapped the magistrate or fought the magistrate or spent the night in a police cell. Gross untruths and wickedness!

Infact, those journalists peddling such LIES in the media, have simply strengthened the position of the Bar Association that some in the media are reckless. I will go further by saying some media are not only reckless but are being run in despotic manners. Just look at recent nonsense appearing in Global Times. It is an abuse of their right to freedom of expression.

However, in Global Times matter, if I do not trust anyone else, I trust Dr. Sylvia Blyden to handle them. She knows how to line them up, blow her whistle and have them do the quick march along the streets of Freetown from Campbell Street to Police CID.
