President Koroma; President of the People, By the People and For the People
By Captain Saio S. Marrah (Rtd) Expert in International Relations and Security Studies

Iconic and cerebral US President Abraham Lincoln once simplified Democracy as government of the people, by the people and for the people. By akin token and as the rhythmic definition elucidates, it can be further expounded as thus; the people choose their government, they participate in the government and the government works in the interest of the people. In theory and due to the rapid universalisation of democracy and its fundamental principles, it implies as if democracy is a deliberate design machinated to conquer Autocracy and all it surrogates - particularly arbitrary rule.

Nevertheless, myriad of despotic rulers have gained power through the guise of democratic means and virtually end up causing incalculable and sadistic havoc on mankind. Others that tend to be more moderate have purely concentrated on the political issues of the state while the moral and ethical concerns of the people are either ignored or neglected. My take on people's government and people's leadership is symptomatic of president Koroma's administration and his leadership style. Why do I say this? It can be commonsensically adduced that; if you are stirring a government of the people, by the people and for the people; then you need to be a president of the people, by the people and for the people.

But the profound enquiry is, what does it take to be such a president? What are the character traits of such leaders? Are such personas intrinsic or can they be developed over time? Such hypothetical questions are critical in cross-examining a leader of the people, by the people and for the people. But before engaging in any painstaking philosophical research endeavours, just juxtapose President Koroma's agendas visa-vie the fetid and chronic cultural, social, political and the general conduct of the Sierra Leoneans. President Koroma is conscious of the correlated problems attached to the now "forgotten civil conflict" that not only destroyed lives and properties but had a telling effect on the conduct, attitude and aptitude of each and every Sierra Leonean.

Captain Saio S. Marrah (Rtd)

President Koroma (unlike other leaders) is not totally carried away by perennial foreign policy concerns, inherent economic and military power maximisation and politicisation of a polarised society. Where President Koroma tilts the political equilibrium is his enthusiasm and determination in ameliorating the ill-thought-outs socio-cultural attitude of every Sierra Leonean. To demonstrate the veracity and objectivity of this assertion, it can be said that President Koroma's philosophical reasoning about cultural decadence in Sierra Leone resulted in the promulgation of the famous but arguably unassimilated Attitudinal and Behavioural Change. This is a trademark political ideology enmeshed and embedded in cultural sensitivity and discipline. Other leaders wouldn't worry about the conduct and attitude of their subjects; because the law, the police, the judiciary and the correctional centres will not cajole nor will they be lenient with acultural and anarchistic individuals.

As People's President Koroma isn't impressed by such hard-core presidential style, he introduced a new political, cultural and ethical approach similar to that of Political Confucianism - by attempting to eliminate cultural decadence and self-indulgence in the form of hedonism from our society. President Koroma is of the conviction that a disciplined and orderly society has a lot to offer at home and abroad in terms of general development. To demonstrate his unique presidential style, President Koroma always creates a legitimate rapport with his ministers and even the Commoners which make it less likely that personal issues and resentment will creep into national issues and derail development.

From ancient times to date, the fact holds and President Koroma is of the view that - when your subjects know that you are empathetic to their concerns, they will be more likely to work with you and share in your vision, rather than foster negative feelings. Moreover, people's president Koroma is a very consistent leader - making him the most respected and credible leader of all times. By setting an example of fairness and credibility, the rest of the politicians and the entire nation are keen to emulate the brilliant examples of the president.

President Koroma's honesty and sense of discipline and dedication creates an environment where political obstacles and social debacles are regularly addressed rather than avoided. Having the vision to break out of the unacceptable norm and status-quo and further aim for greater things that will benefit Sierra Leone forever makes president Koroma a Technical Evolutionary. He creates the wherewithal to set the steps necessary to get there but as argued in one of my recent articles that implementation is frustrating President Koroma's policies; suggests that a critical rethink in that area (policy implementation) is overdue.

All these are essential characteristic of good leadership demonstrated by President Koroma. To further buttress my argument, by envisaging what can be and managing the goals on how to get there, President Koroma has created impressive and indelible change both in Sierra Leone and the international community over a very short period of time. This insinuates that the president really came to make history unlike other leaders who are made by history. Experts in Leadership Studies posit that if you communicate effectively about your expectations, your subordinates will be more likely to react (proactively) and meet your goals. As president of the people, by the people and for the people, President Koroma believes that not every problem demands the same solution. Within that context therefore, he strongly holds that being flexible and unprejudiced to new ideas increase the probability that he will find the best possible answer to every question.

A strong vision coupled with the willingness to see policies/agendas through is one of the most important characteristics of a leader and President Koroma has vowed to "bludgeon anything and anybody" that stands along that route. The Political World Best has been promoted to the People's president in that he believes in his agendas and works diligently towards it thereby inspiring generations yet unborn and serving as a resource to his ministers and other heads of departments/institutions.

In conclusion therefore, it's appropriate to recapitulate that as democracy is government of the people, by the people and for the people; so too is President Koroma - president of the people, by the people and for the people.
