Sierra Leone Politics: APC Disowns Kamaraimba

The ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) party has openly disowned Mohamed Kamaraimba Mansaray, a young Sierra Leonean showing up to contest for the presidency come 2017/18 presidential election.

It can be recalled that Kamaraimba is reported to have been touring the world, using the APC party colour, logo and symbol to declare his intention to run for the countrys presidency in 2018, succeeding President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma.

In a letter written to him by the APC Secretariat recently, he was warned by the partys Secretariat against campaigning for the flagbearership of the party and also using the party symbol, party banner or party T-shirts to campaign. However, Kamaraimba in his reply to the letter denied ever engaging in campaigning for the flagbearership of the party. He further denied that he has never used the party symbol, party banner or party t-shirts to campaign but rather stated that he was merely making his intentions to run for the presidency by connecting with fellow Sierra Leoneans irrespective of party affiliations.

The APC Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Cornelius Deveaux yesterday 24th April 2014 told newsmen in an interview that Mohamed Kamaraimba Mansaray is not and has never been a registered member of the APC. According to him, Kamaraimba came to the partys office few days ago to secretly register himself as a member of the party. He said after sorting out his registration documents, his registration as a member of the party was rejected because he cannot provide a guarantor. He said it was agreed in the last APC National Convention held in Freetown that the issue of successor for the flagbearership of the party should be shelved until 2016.

He said according to the APC 1995 Constitution, one must abide to the rules and principles, ideas and whatever decisions the party had unanimously endorsed.

So if the party has so resolved that the issue of succession should be shelved until 2016, who is Kamaraimba to defy such decision? Deveaux questioned, noting that even if Kamaraimba should now come up with a guarantor to make his registration official, the party will reject him on the grounds that he has already flouted the partys decision.

Speaking on the issue of the slogan After U nar U, misinterpreted to mean that the APC wants a third term for President Koroma, Deveaux said it is clear that every Sierra Leonean has the right to his opinion. He said the APCs position as a party in this has been echoed and reechoed on countless occasions by no less a person but the principal spokesman of the party, President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, that he has no intention to seek a third term. He said people should see this as a policy statement orally coming from the mouth of President Koroma himself. He said the issue of who is going to succeed President Koroma is not at all a burning issue for the APC as the party has a reservoir of competent and capable people to succeed His Excellency President Koroma.

He said for now, as a party, their priority is to ensure that they fulfil their election promises to the people of this country and not petty issues such as a successor or third term presidency.
