PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE UNITED DEMOCRATIC MOVEMENT (UDM) PARTY

18TH JUNE 2014

The United Democratic Movement (UDM), the Third Force, in its effort to preserve and promote democracy, peace, unity and justice is extremely exasperated and dismayed over the ugly development in the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), since the 2012 elections. In light of this, the UDM is compelled to come out with a position statement in condemning the recent development in which the elected chairman of the SLPP, Chief Sumanoh Kapen and the National Secretary General Sulaiman Banja TejanSie, are alleged to have been either suspended or stripped off their legitimate positions respectively.

We are also concerned with the continuing commotions and disturbances, disorder and confusion in the SLPP, as well as the failure of the SLPP in performing, among other things, its primary responsibility of acting as a watchdog in keeping government on its toes. As the main opposition party in the country with knowledge of governance since 1951, we expect the SLPP to work in conformity with its effort to usher prosperity to the people of Sierra Leone.

The UDM is disappointed and dissatisfied with the mishap in the SLPP, hemmed with abysmal failure in upholding democracy and unity within the party.Instead, the party disgracefully embarked on mix-up, misunderstanding, fighting one another and pulling - down syndrome.

At this backdrop, the UDM in the spirit of peace and unity want the SLPP to resolve its impasse, which has gone a long time unresolved and unabated. The roof has been leaking for some time for quite too long and to date no amends have been made, and the roof leaks more than ever. If measures are not put in place, there is tendency that the internal wrangling will degenerate in to chaos and this will affect the whole nation; as our democracy is under threat and this will affect national unity and cohesion, which is the bed rock of democracy and development.

With no prejudice, the SLPP has many things to contend with. We are concerned with the fight among Members of Parliament over the position of the minority leader; the court case between the camp of Mr. Alie Bangura and that of Chief Sumanoh Kapen over their national  convention election fraud allegation; the suspension of regional executives; the continuing stalemate within the party and above all, the alleged suspension of national officials.

In light of the above, it should be noted that the UDM is not encroaching or trespassing into the activities of the SLPP but we are doing this for the best interest of democracy, peace and development.

UDM, YES WE CAN! LONG LIVE DEMOCRACY!! LONG LIVE UDM!!! LONG LIVE SIERRA LEONE!!!!

Signed:

Mohamed Bangura

Chairman and Leader
