Senior members of the Sierra Leone Medical & Dental association (SLMDA) have openly expressed appreciation for President Ernest Koroma during an extraordinary meeting of SLMDA at the Ministry of Health Conference Room, Youyi Building in Freetown. This meeting followed an earlier closed-door meeting with the President at State House during which it was reported that frank exchanges were held between the Head of State and the countrys top medical practitioners.

According to reports, the two meetings were held on Wednesday 20th August 2014. The first meeting at State House was upon the invitation of His Excellency the President whilst the second meeting at the Health Ministry was to expand upon the discussions with the President but with a technical focus.

Addressing their colleagues in the presence of the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Brima Kargbo, some of the very senior medical doctors present, expressed appreciation with the efforts of the President in respectfully asking for their professional advise, their thoughts and inputs towards the ongoing fight against the Ebola virus. After silent prayers in memory of their fallen SLMDA members, Dr. Sheikh Umar Khan and Dr. Modupeh Cole, the medical doctors present used the occasion to formally introduce themselves to the technical professionals of the Health Ministry since it was the very first time the SLMDA was meeting the Health Ministry since the outbreak of the Ebola Virus back in May 2014.

After this, the doctors and health ministry officials held extensive discussions about the way forward in tackling the spread of Ebola. At the end of the meeting, it was decided that as per request of the President, three senior doctors will immediately be co-opted into the Presidential Task Force on Ebola. Another three will be co-opted into the Emergency Operations Center at WHO Country Office and a further three more senior doctors will now be present at all inter-ministerial meetings on Ebola. The doctors present stated renewed determination to join President Koroma in ending the deadly Ebola viral transmission.

It was also agreed for registered private clinics to be supplied with adequate gloves, face masks and protective suits.

Present in the meetings were likes of Dr. Patrick Coker, Dr. Sahr Gevao, Dr. Kojo Carew, Dr. James Russell, Dr. A.D.O. Wright and many other well respected medical doctors. Also to now be represented at all levels of the national fight against Ebola, will be the local chapters of the West African College of Physicians and West African College of Surgeons.
