After sailing for few weeks without a case, the Kenema District Medical Officer (DMO), Dr. Mohamed Vandy last evening confirmed a new case of Ebola in Kenema City as of yesterday 14th January, 2015.  The case, a male nurse, is said to have already died from his symptoms earlier on Tuesday even before his positive result was released.

Dr. Vandy said the nurse was working at Kenema Red Cross Treatment Centre but did not make confirmation as to how the nurse came into contact with the virus. He said an investigation is being mounted.

Meanwhile, all those suspected to have had contact with him such as his family and co-workers; all living in Kenema have been swiftly quarantined.

A 14th January 2015 press release from International Red Cross has expressed sadness over the death of thenurse which is the first Ebola death amongst Red Cross staff in Sierra Leone.

In another related issue, Bombali DMO, Dr. Tom Sesay via telephone told the Awareness Times that a new case  also recorded for Bombali yesterday was from a quarantined home at Yoroma village in Gbanti Kamaranka. Dr Sesay said target is to maintain a continuous zero Ebola by months end. This he  said was possible with vigilance of health workers and local populace.

The surveillance team, our contact tracers, monitors and all health care workers are very zealous to see a reduction in the reports to continuous zero digits in this month, he ended.
