In the wake of the dismissal of the minister and deputy minister at the ministry responsible for Women's Affairs, it has pleased the President to appoint the Minister of State 2 for Foreign Affairs to lead Sierra Leone's delegation to the 60th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) to be held at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 14 to 24 March 2016.

This is according to a signed correspondence from the Cabinet Secretary that was widely shared on social media as well as communication from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent to the Minister Plenipotentiary of the Sierra Leone Mission at the UN in New York. The latter stated that the Minister of State, Foreign Affairs(2), Ms. Isata Kabia, will lead this years delegation to the Session whilst the Cabinet Secretary wrote to inform Hon. Isata Kabia that it has pleased the President to appoint her as Acting Minister of Social Welfare, Gender & Children's Affairs.

The Session will be attended by representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world.

Two themes will guide this years session. The Priority theme will be Womens empowerment and its link to sustainable development, while the Review theme will be The elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls (agreed conclusions from the fifty-seventh session).

Already, a Multi-Stakeholders Forum, was held on 21 January 2016 during which UN Women convened a forum to engage a range of stakeholders in the preparations for the upcoming CSW60 at UN Headquarters in New York.

There will also be an Expert Group Meeting and in preparation for this at sixtieth session, UN Women convened an expert group meeting (EGM) in New York on Womens empowerment and its link to sustainable development in November 2015.

The CSW says, "The outcome of the Commissions consideration of the priority theme takes the form of agreed conclusions, negotiated by all States

The programme of side events, or activities organized outside the formal programme of the session of the Commission, provides an excellent opportunity for Member States, UN entities and NGOs to discuss themes of the Commission and other critical gender equality issues, CSW says.
