A number   of Paramount Chiefs from both Southern and Eastern regions and other authorities in the Local Governance System converged on Tuesday 2nd May, 2016 at the Kenema District Council Hall, Nyandeyama Road, Kenema Town to witness the launch of a consultative program for the de-amalgamation of some chiefdoms in the country.

The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Maya Moiwo Kaikai whilst addressing Chiefs and other authorities before launching the program informed all that there are processes  that are involved  in de- amalgamation and as a minister he will ensure they are fully followed. He noted that amalgamation in some areas has proved to be unworkable and source of conflicts and disunity.

On the issue of payment for Paramount Chiefs, the Minister said due to conflicting figures from the Chiefs about the number of personnel, the Ministry of Finance is constrained to effect prompt and regular payment.

He went on to encourage the Chiefs, the District Officers, and the Local Councils to maintain good working relationship amongst themselves.

The Minister said recognition for newly elected Chiefs will soon effect after consultation with the President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma.

ďYou have to be informed about every development projects in your Chiefdoms by NGOs because they entrusted funds on behalf of the Government. The DOs also have the responsibility to monitor council projects to ensure accountability and sustainable development especially in the rural areas.Ē He added.¬† He also said that to ensure rural development he is going to maintain coordination with the Resident Ministers, the DOs and provincial secretaries. He however warned all not to side step the structures instituted.

However, this move to de-amalgamate Sierra Leoneís chiefdoms has earlier been criticised by the leader and chairman of Alliance Democratic Party (ADP), Mr. Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray, who said the process is not timely. Mr. Mansaray argued that the process would likely to derail the current demarcation of electoral constituencies across the country. Therefore, he urged the Minister to take further considerations on the issues before delving into regrettable decisions.

However, this move to de-amalgamate chiefdoms has been welcomed by Paramount Chiefs during an earlier meeting between the Minister and them. The meeting was held on Thursday 14th April, 2016 to discuss calls for the de-amalgamation of chiefdoms. The Paramount Chiefs, during the meeting, told journalists that the de-amalgamation was an immediate need that is ďessentialĒ.
