Henry Macauley The Missing Part Of The Puzzle

The Ministry of Energy was perhaps the most unpopular of all government ministries.

This is not unconnected with the epileptic power supply it previously provided Sierra Leoneans. Names like Sulzer 4 or Sulzer 5 were unpleasant homophones that painfully represented the moribund state of our energy sector.

H.E. Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma: President of Republic of Sierra Leone

Ironically perhaps, the Ministry of Energy has enjoyed  more changes in leadership than any other government ministry. Like a medical doctor who keeps providing different prescriptions to a patient with a stubborn ailment, President Koroma has ensured no one toyed with one of his key priorities. For reasons of ineptitude and graft, the President has sacked previous Energy Ministers without blinking.

We were engulfed by a cloud of hopelessness as our energy sector keeps crawling despite the mouth watering sums pumped it it. People in most parts of Freetown were so used to blackouts that, like the proverbial munkus,  they will jump and scream; Light don kam!!! each time they get few hours of electricity.

Hon. Henry Macauley: Minister of Energy and Power

The appointment of the former High Commissioner to Nigeria, Henry Macauley as Energy Minister came with much cynicism.

Many observers were less enthusiastic about a positive turn-around because they believed the Ministry of Energy, constantly plagued by the shenanigans of  shameless rogues and demagogues was as crippled as the energy it generated and distributed to homes and offices.

Fortunately, Henry Macauley has proved his critics wrong. The incresase in power generation in Freetown, Makeni, Bo, Konema, Kono, Lungi and Lunsar has been colossal. This significant improvement can only mean that the unassuming but highly methodical Henry Macauley has decided to immerse himself in a job that require you to sleep with your one eye open.

Apparently, he has ensured Sierra Leone, which hitherto enjoyed not more than 6 megawatts of electricity now enjoys over 100 megawatts from new and existing hydro and thermal sources.

The establishment of two separate but complementing entities within the Ministry to generate and distribute energy was clearly testament of the former High Commissioners technical and administrative prowess.

Such wisdom is sacrosanct as it has salvaged the troubles consumers used to encounter on a daily basis with the former N.P.A humorously tagged No Proper Arrangement. The haphazard chaotic scenes at Electricity Building on Siaka Stevens are no more!!!

Henry Macaulay was a proud receipient of an energy innovation award in the United Kingdom recently. The citation did not fall short of recording his outstanding contributions to the energy sector. Indeed, prophets are celebrated not in thier home towns. Congratulations!!!  HM.

The provision of a whopping $138 million by the World Bank to boost power supply in the Western Area may have been necessitated by our current energy deficit. In my view, this equally represents the level of confidence we have restored in our energy sector management. Thanks to Henry Macauley!!!

President Ernest Bai Koroma has been busy reading the energy jigsaw to roll out his ambitious energy program around the country. The several pieces he has used have simply failed to match up.

As a resilient leader, he has stayed the course to finally find that missing part of the puzzle in the form of a humble and dedicated servant.

Thank you President Koroma for giving us Henry Macauley!!!
