Sierra Leone News : Head of Civil Service Dr. Surrur says... Sylvia Blyden's Concern Mimics Ernest Koroma's Upon Taking up Office

The Head of Sierra Leone Civil Service has confessed that he is leading a civil service that was not fit for purpose but that everyone from His Excellency President Koroma down, has no option but to work with such a mis-fitted service. He was speaking as he responded to strong criticisms from new Cabinet Minister Hon. Dr. Sylvia Blyden which criticisms he said re-echoes the position of current President upon taking up office nine years ago.

"The civil service we have now is not the civil service we need to push this country forward," were the words of Dr. Surrur the current Head of the Civil Service.

Dr. Surrur: Head of the Sierra Leone Civil Service

Despite his confession above, the Head of Civil Service publicly issued a thinly veiled threat to the new Minister Blyden that if she wanted to succeed as minister, she will have to learn the hard way to work with the corrupt state of affairs in the civil service.

It appears as if President Koroma over the past nine years in office, has also been forced to learn to work with the ill-fitted Civil Service.

Both Surrur and Blyden were speaking in Port Loko on Saturday July 30th at a Workshop called to discuss the newly launched Sierra Leone International Benchmarks Systems.

"The new minister sounds very much like how President Koroma used to sound when he first took up office," Dr. Surrur said, adding "every time there was a public gathering of civil servants, the President used to just be blasting us. Every time, it was blasting, blasting, blasting until one day at a public function at Civil Service Training School, I took the bull by the horns and gave back a strong rebuttal to the blasting".

Meanwhile, the issue of the civil service is now very topical amongst citizens. The public perception as monitored on social media, is that the President is not doing himself any good right now with his apparent sustenance of such a failed state of affairs within the civil service. A failed state as confessed by no less a person than the Head of the Civil Service.

It is a fact that History is being written as each day goes by. The Ernest Bai Koroma legacy is being written down in many spheres of life in Sierra Leone. The management of a corrupt Civil Service that is not fit for purpose and which glaringly lacks integrity, will not be exempted.

See inside pages of this edition for a report by a group of journalists who compiled the developments as happened in Port Loko on Saturday.
