One of the All Peoples Congress (APC) strongest women, Haja Dr. Zainab Hawa Bangura has called on all supporters of the party to help President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma completes his Agenda for Prosperity, instead of fighting to succeed him.

Dr. Bangura, who herself has been tipped by many to succeed President Koroma made this statement at the 50/50 Group Sierra Leone 10th Annual Rajiv Bendre Lecture Series at the Family Kingdom Hall on Friday 12th August, 2016.

Whilst commenting on her intentions to run for the Presidency of Sierra Leone in the 2018 election under the ticket of APC, Dr. Zainab Hawa Bangura said President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma still has a year more to complete his Agenda for Prosperity. Therefore, I am not yet ready to declare as his successor, but to urge everyone to rally behind him so that he can succeed.

Dr. Zainab Hawa Bangura, who is the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, and had served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Minister of Health and Sanitation under the APC led government of President Koroma said my work at the UN is in line with the Presidents, because he still decides my fate in the current UN job. For everything I do, he is given credit for it.

Furthermore, Dr. Zainab Hawa Bangura said that the issue of presidency is a very serious, stating that declaring for it means one really needs to be prepared. She therefore said one cannot wake up one morning and say you want to be the President, because becoming President takes great effort, and it is very challenging.

As she explained her experience in working with presidents across the world, both as former Foreign Minister and as UN representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Dr. Zainab Hawa Bangura said I have worked with some before they became presidents, I worked with others when they are presidents, and I also worked with others after their terms as president ended. Therefore, I know what it takes to be a president. She therefore stressed that one has to have a plan before declaring for presidency.

In addition, Dr. Zainab Hawa Bangura ended by stating that she has worked with President for so long, both as his deputy at Reliance Insurance Trust Corporation (RITCORP) and as a minister in President Koromas government. Therefore, she said, she is in the position to tell how dedicated he was and that to be a President is not todays job. Also, she confirmed that she is not yet ready to declare for the Presidency ticket of the APC, and that she will do so at the appropriate time.

Dr. Zainab Hawa Bangura was the guest speaker of the programme and she spoke about the need for Gender Justice in every sector. The event was well attended by men and women from all walks of life such as market women, petty traders, lawyers, bankers and many more.
