Presidential Spokesman, Abdulai Bayraytay has during an exclusive chat with this newspaper in the evening hours of Wednesday, 17th August, 2016 reacted to allegations made by sections of the society especially opposition political parties and civil society groups that the All Peoples Congress (APC) led government of President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma lied to the youths of Koinadugu district and that the discovery of the lies is what led to rioting on Tuesday, that according to police sources, claimed the lives of 3 individuals.

Whilst elaborating on the circumstances surrounding the proposal to relocate a portion of the intending 30 million dollars China funded youths project from Kabala, Koinadugu district; to Mile 91, in Tonkolili district, Mr. Bayraytay confirmed that it were the Chinese themselves who took the decision. He said, the decision, according to the Chinese, is never to deny youths of Koinadugu district the opportunities that would be provided by the Youth Village Project but rather to create a level playing field and easier access to the multi-million dollar project for youths in other districts across the country.

Mr. Bayraytay furthered the Chinese, who are the sponsors of the project, sent their experts across the country to search for a more geographically suitable place. Therefore, they were the ones who proposed Mile 91 for their project, as they said Mile 91 being in center of the country, could be more easily accessed by youths from the southern, eastern and western parts of the country alongside the northern districts.

In addition, the Presidential Spokesman further delved that the Chinese only proposed to relocate a part of the youth vocational and skills training centre from Kabala to Mile 91. However, they said other aspects like the agricultural project would still remain in Kabala.

Meanwhile, sources say that since the Vice President, Dr. Victor Bockarie Foh broke the news of the Chinese intention to relocate a portion of the Youth Village investment from Kabala to Mile 91, during a celebration of the International Youth Day in Kambia on Friday 12th August, youths of Kabala became outraged and descended into massive demonstration. On Tuesday, that demonstration claimed the lives of three (3) youths, four (4) seriously injured and twenty (20) more in police custody.

Eversince the incident, several civil right organisations and opposition parties has been heaping criticisms on the government and the Presidency for what the referred to as lies and fake promises. In response, the Presidential spokesman has reacted to the criticisms on the government, referring to them as baseless and unfounded. Mr. Bayraytay confirmed that the project is not government funded. Therefore, he stated the Chinese choose how and where they want to invest their money.

He ended by also confirming that the government of President Koroma has launched an investigation into the causes of the unfortunate misunderstandings between the youths and the police in Kabala, and promise to ensure that Sierra Leone maintains it position as the most peaceful nation in West Africa.
