The Chairman NATCOM- Mr. Momoh K. Konteh has said the commission is going to take serious actions against the misuse of social media by people. He made this statement during the stakeholders’ consultative meeting on the use of social media on Tuesday 27th September 2016 at Bintumani Hotel, Freetown.
He said that they are not going to block or ban social media, but they are going to institute regulations that will oversee the operations and the negative use of social medial with the support of the communication companies in order to help enforce the regulations and stop the negative use of social media by people in the country.

The Chairman disclosed that Facebook Company has assured them that they will share all their regulations and things that the Facebook users are not to do and what they are permitted to do on the platform.
He added that Facebook group of companies has promised to work with the police of this country by enforcing the regulations and protect the image of the citizens of this country by tracking the negative users of the forum.
“Social media is a very good communication forum, but people should use it, as there are responsible people that are using this same social media across the country while others are misusing it.”
He furthered the public should give the commission two weeks to come up with the regulation and laws that will constitute the negative use of social media which will be presented to the Minister of Information and Communications, which he in turn, will eventually present to cabinet.
The board chairman Independent Media Commission (IMC) Amb. Alliue Kanu said the leadership of NATCOM has taken a very bold step by conducting this important consultative meeting in order to address the negative and positive uses of social media in the country.
The Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Cornelius Deveaux said social media is now a distortive element while other countries are using it very well adding people have the right to freedom of expression while others have right of privacy.
He said most Sierra Leoneans always misuse things. “When the war came, people started killing pregnant women, cutting people’s hands and many other bad things were done during that period; when Ebola came, the similar bad things happened, and now the negative use of social media is all around us.”
He said his government will do anything possible to put a stop to the misuse of social media. “If it causes us to use the China ways, we will use it,” he insisted.
