Outspoken Sierra Leone-American Anthropologist, Dr. Fuambai Sia Ahmadu, a Ph.D holder, has alleged that western governments including the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA) are in the habit of financing for young girls to undergo genital cuttings, which she said has similar attributes to that which is done by over eighty percent (80%) of women in Sierra Leone.
Dr. Ahmadu made these statements during a press conference on Thursday 22nd September 2016 in Freetown.

Whilst presenting her case, Dr Ahmadu said that unlike Sierra Leone, where the very responsible government of President Koroma has vehemently denounced girl child circumcision, out in the west, “children below the age of nine (9) are being funded by their governments to undergo similar practices but instead they are calling them beautiful names.”
She therefore commends the Sierra Leone government for not directly funding female circumcision and for unreservedly denouncing the circumcision of girls below the age of consent.
Dr. Ahmadu also unveiled to a jampacked audience of journalists, her new organisation called Sierra Leone Women are Free to Choose (SLWAFC), which “focused on raising awareness amongst grassroots Sierra Leonean women and adolescent girls of their constitutional rights in the face of highly organized and aggressive anti-FGM campaigners.”
She furthered that infact, thousands of white adult women and hundreds of white teenage girls go to doctors to imitate the exact same procedure that is done in the African Bondo Bushes.
She said “these harmful anti-FGM campaigns use media propaganda to portray our own African bodily practices as coerced, harmful and an infringement on the rights of girls and women.”
As she narrated, Dr. Ahmadu said that the term ‘Mutilation’ is never applicable to a Bondo woman that is circumcised. She rather explained that “what transpires in female circumcision as practiced by more than 80% of our Sierra Leonean women through the Bondo Society, involves cosmetic trimming, which is similar to the white man funded projects for women and girls as small as nine (9) years old.”
The Sierra Leonean-American scholar ended by specifically identifying and praising the Minister of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs. She praised Honourable Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden for her boldness to tell the World that adult women should be allowed to do what they want with their bodies but girls under the age of consent, should be protected by all governments from female circumcision and genital cuttings.
