The House of Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone has on Tuesday 30th May, 2017 okayed a Bill entitled National Water Resources Management Act.
Being an Act to provide for the equitable, beneficial, efficient and sustainable use and management of the country’s water resources. It’s also pushes to establish a National Water Resources Management Agency which main duties will be to provide a water basin management Board and water Catchment areas management committee for the management of the water resources and for other related matters.
The Minister of Water Resources, Momodu Maligie, In his presentation said the Act is seeking to provides for the continuation in existence of the Sierra Leone National Water Resources Management, with the aim of providing for a more equitable, beneficial, efficient and sustainable use and management of the country’s water resources; management of water catchment areas in the country.
He said that this Act will help create an agency that will help manage the water system in the country as we have many water catchment problems in the country and if not managed and take care of it, they may loss it one day.
He said this agency will help to take care and manage the water system in the entire country and help produce water soon.
He added that this will create a new institutional framework for the management of the water resources and provide for the function, powers and composition of the agency in pursuance of the National Water Sanitation policy of Sierra Leone and for other related matters.
Members of parliament from both sides unanimously support the ratification of Bill into law.
