The Managing Director for Sierra Leone State Lottery, Charles Kamara has requested that their institution should be regulated.
He made this statement when giving their status report on Tuesday 13th June 2017 to the Oversight Committee on Trade in Parliament.
He added that Sierra Leone State Lottery is an established by an Act of Parliament for a very long time and that they have been requested for a regulatory body since 2010 and up till now they have not received any respond from any institution in the country.
He informed that State Lottery is the betting company that is operating in Sierra Leone but the industry is lacking regulatory body and it’s the oldest betting company in the country but they lack protection of the under age children and other vulnerable groups that are participating in the company.
He added that lottery is the game of choice as anyone can play the game and make profit out of it.
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Francis Amara Kaisamba said this is why they want that common understanding between the Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) that are under the purview of his committee to be visiting the committee and update them on issues like this but they hardly do that until they are summon by the committee.
He said Sierra Leone State Lottery is one of the oldest betting companies in Sierra Leone and he is shock to hear all of this information from the industry.
He said the committee will decide on which way to put this issue to rest.
Other institutions that faced the Trade committee awere: Petroleum Regulatory Agency (PRA) and Sierra Leone Produce Marketing Company (SLPMC).
