National Secretary General of the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) Ambassador Osman Foday Yansaneh has said that the recent instability in the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) might be a reason for the disgrace shown to Chief Somano Kapen and the Yumkella family of Kambia District, Northern Province of Sierra Leone.
Ambassador Yansaneh made this statement yesterday Wednesday 14th June, 2017, whilst reacting to the confirmation by the country’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) that the SLPP did not nominate any candidate for a bye election that is scheduled to take place in Ward 139, Kambia District, on Friday 30th June, 2017.
Whilst explaining, the APC National Scribe said that Kambia District is the home district of the current Chairman and Leader of SLPP, Chief Somano Kapen III and also the home district of a leading presidential aspirant for the SLPP candidacy in the 2018 polls, Kandeh Yumkella and his family, but that he said the revelation of the recent happenings in the north has clearly shown that SLPP has no face in the region.
Ambassador however added that the APC will treat all nominated candidates as opposition, and assured that his party will definitely reclaim the seat.
Meanwhile, when contacted by Awareness Times Newspaper late yesterday evening during a telephone interview, the NEC Kambia District Returning Officer, Umaru Fomba confirmed that the nomination held on Tuesday 13th June, 2017, was very peaceful at the NEC District office in Kambia Town. He confirmed that all political parties were very calm and that the process was very smooth.
Umaru Fomba added that only three candidates were nominated for the bye election in Ward 139. He named that the incumbent APC nominated Mohamed Khalil Kanu, whilst the opposition Alliance Democratic Party (ADP) filled Mohamed Kamara, and an Independent Candidate named Ibrahim Kanu was also nominated.
In addition, Umaru Fomba assured of NEC commitment in ensuring that the polls on Friday 30th June, are free, fare and transparent.
Meanwhile, Awareness Times contacted both Chief Somano Kapen and the Northern Regional Chairman of the SLPP, Dr Abass Chernor Bundu to get their sides on reasons for which the SLPP failed to nominate a candidate in the bye election in Ward 139. However, both men declined to comment on the issue without given any reasons.
