Programmes Manager, National Blood Service in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), Professor Sahr Moses Geveo has on Monday 19th June 2017 at the MOHS Conference Room, Youyi Building in Freetown described the current blood bank in the country as totally empty as the number of voluntary blood donation has drastically drop to 15%.

Prof. Geveo made the disclosure while addressing journalists on this year’s commemoration of Blood Donor Day.

World Blood Donor Day is commemorated June 14th every year but MOHS and World Health Organisation (WHO) has scheduled Wednesday 21st June, 2017, to commemorate the Sierra Leone Blood Donor Day.

Prof. Geveo said the occasion is geared towards appreciating members of the public who have save lives by donating their blood over the years. He went on to say that, blood is life and without blood there will be no life as it carries useful oxygen and food and it is needed by pregnant women who are bleeding, malnourish children, those who involved in road accidents, Chronic disorder, like Cancer to name but few.

Prof. Geveo stated that, there are two sets of blood donors; Voluntary Blood Donors and Replacement Blood Donors but voluntary blood donation is the best. “Blood is the best gift you can give to mankind. For you to donate blood, you need to be fit, strong and healthy and blood donors live longer. The age limit for a blood donor is 17 to 60 years and there is no danger in blood donation to save life,” Prof. Geveo said.

Lead, Reproductive & Maternal Health, World Health Organization (WHO) in Sierra Leone, Dr. Fatu Forna, said Sierra Leone has one of the highest maternal deaths in the world and one of the causes is due to lack of blood.

She called on members of the public to embark on voluntary blood donation to save lives. Dr. Forna called for a routine blood donation in schools, Churches, Mosques, workplace and communities. She appealed to the public to inculcate the habit of voluntary blood donation as it is safer and healthier.

Desmond Lewis who started blood donation since 14th May1988, has set a record by marking his 100-voluntary blood donation on Monday 19th June instant.

He called on WHO to support voluntary blood donors across the country in a bid to continue in doing so. He added that, before they were more than 4000 voluntary blood donors across the country but that number has dwindled to hundreds due to lack of support for donors. He called on members of the public to form themselves into blood donor clubs in their community as he will once again embark on a nationwide tour to encourage the public on voluntary blood donation.

Programmes Manager, Health Education Unit, Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), Mr.Lansana Conteh maintained that to mark this year’s commemoration, there will be special sites at the following locations on Wednesday 21st June 2017 from 10 am to 3pm for members of the public to voluntarily donate blood; Youyi Building in Freetown, Benguma Barracks, Connaught Hospital. District Council Hall in Port Loko, Coronation Field in Moyamba, Government Hospital in Kailahun, Pujehun Town Hall, Mattru School of Nursing in Bonthe, Kabala Government Hospital Administrative Building, Kenema Government Hospital Eye Clinic Department, Sandra Motel-Magburaka, Red Cross Hall, Koidu City, DHMT in Kambia and Makeni Regional Hospital.
