Former chairman and leader of the main opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) has warned Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella (KKY) not to join any coalition if he wants to contest in the March 2018 Presidential election. Mr. John Oponjo Benjamin was speaking to the Awareness Times Newspaper yesterday Wednesday 19th July, 2017.

Whilst narrating, Mr. Benjamin said “there is no way a grand coalition can defeat the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) in the coming elections.”

Dr. Kandeh Yumkella: JOB says please think wisely on whether a coalition or the SLPP

In addition, Mr. Benjamin, who is fondly called JOB, highlighted the fact that the two leading political parties in the country, APC and SLPP have very strong support in all regions of Sierra Leone. He stressed on the APC supports in the northern and western regions, whilst at the same time delving into the SLPP supports from the southern and eastern regions.

As a result, the SLPP strongman said that no coalition will ever survive without the backing of either the APC or the SLPP. Thus, he said Dr. Yumkella cannot survive in his coalition without the support of either the APC or the SLPP.

Meanwhile, whilst talking on the decision of Dr. Yumkella to join a grand coalition, Mr. Benjamin said “I personally believe that Dr. Yumkella was frustrated in the SLPP. However, I don’t feel it was wise for him to suspend his flagbearer aspirations. I wanted him to stay so we could fight together against injustice in the SLPP.”

Mr. Benjamin, who is also a flagbearer aspirant for the SLPP for the March 2018 Presidential election added that like Dr. Yumkella, he has been under attack from members of a certain aspirant. He said at some point in time, one of his supporters was butchered in the Eastern Provisional headquarters of Kenema City. However, he said he is staying in the SLPP to change the injustice there.

Mr. Benjamin said, “I feel if Dr. Yumkella cannot withstand the heat of the SLPP, then how he can contest the most ruthless APC”? He added, “the APC I know has no child’s game when it comes to elections.”

Therefore, he said, “I believe the only political party in Sierra Leone that can fiercely contest the APC is the SLPP.”

Meanwhile, it could be recalled that earlier this month, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella suspended his intention to run for the flagbearer of the SLPP, stating that he could join a grand coalition.

Against this backdrop, Awareness Times Newspaper called Mr. Benjamin to comment on the decision of Dr Yumkella to join a coalition. At this juncture, Mr. Benjamin warned that no coalition can ever defeat the APC in any presidential election, without the backing of the SLPP.
