The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Freetown has provided 19 spaces to doctors and nurses of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation to pursue a training course in Pediatric Critical Care in China. The training will be held at the Hunan Children’s Hospital, Hunan Province, China between 2 August and 26 September 2017.

This Province is renowned for its excellent health Care system and it is home to all the Chinese Medical Teams to Sierra Leone.

At a ceremony held at the Ministry of Health and Sanitation conference room on Monday 31 July, 2017, Dr. Brima Kargbo, the Chief Medical Officer said that this was not the first support from the Chinese government. Many of our staffs have benefitted immensely from these training programs; with enhanced skills, he commented. He admonished the participants to take advantage of the opportunity as others have done in the past.  He said as ambassadors of health for Sierra Leone, it is very importance that the 19 participants to behave appropriately during their course in China. Dr. Kargbo concluded by thanking the Economic and Commercial counsellor Mr. Shen Xiaokai and the 19th Chinese Medical team for their support in helping to build a vibrant health care system.

During his remarks, Mr. Shen Xiaokai, the Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Freetown said that he was happy to see 19 smiling faces in the conference room. He observed that some 46 years ago China and Sierra Leone established bilateral relations under the leadership of the late President Siaka Stevens; two years later, China started sending medical teams to Sierra Leone.

He stated that some 30 years ago, China was experiencing similar challenges in its child health care, but with hard work and innovation, China was able to overcome those challenges. He said that he was confident Sierra Leone can overcome these challenges too, and it is on this backdrop that China will continue to provide both technical and logistical support to Sierra Leone. He added that 30 nurses will soon depart the shores of Freetown for malaria prevention and control training in China.

Mr. Shen Xiaokai concluded his statement with an announcement to the cheers of all in the room. He said the Chinese Embassy will provide training opportunities in different fields of specialty for 100 doctors and nurses to travel to China next year. He handed over the flight tickets and travel itineraries to the Chief Medical Officer for onward distribution to the participants.

Matilda Sia Sandy, one of the nurses gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the participants. She thanked the Economic Counsellor for providing the opportunity and the leadership of the ministry for nominating them.

She promised that they will do their best to achieve success during the training in China.
