The Commissioner General of the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Allieu Sesay, yesterday Thursday 22nd January 2009, disclosed to journalists that the Authority was able to collect the total sum of Le 619.543Bn (six hundred and nineteen billion five hundred and forty three million leones) in domestic taxes.

This disclosure was made at a press conference addressed yesterday by the NRA Commissioner General, who explained that the state of affairs at the Authority prior to his appointment was abysmal in terms of staff performance and professional standards.

According to him, revenues collected in the years 2006 and 2007 for instance, were dismal.

Based on the challenges posed by the inherited dismal state of affairs at the Authority, he said he and his team adopted several measures aimed at improving tax administration and promoting voluntary tax compliance.

Mr. Sesay said that the growth in the revenue collection in the year 2008 could be attributed to the fact that throughout the said year, the Authority augmented its revenue generation efforts with activities aimed at improving the tax administration system, noting that such activities have led to the broadening of the tax base as well as facilitating trade through re-engineering and streaming the Authorityís business processes and procedures. He commended the efforts of Ibrahim Sorie Kamara, the acting Commissioner General of the Income Tax Department, pointing out the volume of revenue collected last year was possible courtesy of his hard work and patriotism.

He ended by assuring the nation that the good work begun will be continued.
