In Sierra Leone, Sexual Abuse Mounts in Tonkolili

The Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Magburaka Division in the Tonkolili District, Chief Superintendent Karrow Kamara, has expressed dismay over the increase in sexual abuses in that part of the country.

The LUC was particularly concerned over the multiple rape cases reported between the period 11th and 16th April, 2009.

In an interview with the Line Manager of the Family Support Unit (FSU) at the Magburaka Division, Detective Police Constable 5878 Idrissa Nelson Kamara, he informed that the unit is presently investigating three cases of rape in the district.

Accordingly, Suliaman Conteh aged 21, and residing at Magbass village, sexually abused an ageable dumb woman on 11th April 2009, and later confessed to the crime with an apology.

Also, Pa Umuru Sesay aged 62, and a resident of No. 6 Kamara Lane in Magburaka, sexually abused a 10 year old girl on 16th April 2009 inside a room in a mosque yard, where he is employed as caretaker. Pa Umuru Sesay is said to be a married man with 10 children and 12 grand children.

According to police sources also, Abu Turay aged 19, residing at an area called New London in Magburaka and a Junior Secondary School (JSS 3) pupil at the Christ the King College (CKC) in Bo, on 16th April 2009, raped a 13 year old girl, virginating her in the process.

All three perpetrators are in custody at the Magburaka Police Station awaiting charges of rape, indecent assault and unlawful carnal knowledge.

LUC Karrow Kamara told Awareness Times in a snap interview that the matter would not be treated lightly, adding that he is determined to protect and uphold the rights and dignity of women.
