Journalists & Citizens Storm Sierra Leone Courts in support of Sylvia Blyden
May 20, 2009, 20:11
Almost one hundred journalists backed by hundreds of citizens today stormed the Law Courts in support of Sierra Leone's leading female journalist who was charged to Court this afternoon on a one-count charge of publishing false material which the State Police accuse of being a Conspiracy aimed at getting the First Lady angry with the President and thus exposing the President to security threat by disrupting his marital home. Blyden was granted bail and walked out of court to loud cheers. The matter comes up again tomorrow when the Director of Public Prosecution, O.V. Robbin Mason will do what he calls a 'token start'. Blyden's Editor, Abdul Karim Kabia, was not in court as he was ill and receiving treatment. Blyden freely walked into the CID of the Sierra Leone Police this morning from where she was unexpectedly charged to court. As the news spread that she was in Court, throngs of citizens and local journalists led by the SLAJ President, turned up in a show of solidarity.
