Headmen Elections show SLPP takes Freetown Peninsular
Apr 26, 2010, 14:50

Last weekend elections of the Freetown Western Rural Peninsular area Headmen has produced results that has left the ruling All People’s Congress (APC) very worried and perplexed as revealed by many of them to this presshouse when the results were announced. The APC has had a firm grip over the politics of the Peninsular since 2004 when they grasped it away from the now-opposition SLPP during that year;s Local Government Elections.

The uncontested hold of APC within the Freetown Peninsular has now been shattered as the vast majority of their candidates put forward as Area Headmen woefully lost to candidate well known to sympathise with or belong to the opposition SLPP. Even in areas where the APC won, it was by slimmer margins unlike in previous elections where they would take the areas in landslide victories.

The election of Ibrahim ‘Small Borbor’ as a Local Councillor in 2008 for the Goderich Area has proved not to be an anomaly as the Headman supported by Dr. John Karimu and Dr. Bobson Sesay swept the votes for Goderich Village beating the APC supported candidate.

Similarly at Adonkia, at Ogoo Farm, Angola Town all the way to Waterloo, apart from a handful of areas like in Tokeh, it was woeful losses for any candidate supported by the APC.

Meanwhile, one of the few areas where an APC candidate won is the area where Haja Afsatu Kabba resides. Reports are that despite her indictment, she had helped the  APC candidate to campaign and her open support for him led to a win in her area.

However, in most of the other areas, numerous residents informed this presshouse that they decided not to vote for APC candidates as a means of sending a Wake-Up call to President Koroma over his perceived “horrible” treatment of Haja Afsatu Kabba.

The Local Government Chairman for that region is APC’s Alhassan Cole and he was yesterday reported to be hard at work preparing for the attention of President Koroma, a list of possible reasons why the party performed so badly at the hands of pro-SLPP candidates. Prominent at the top of his reasons is said to be “the issue of Haja Afsatu Kabba”.
