In Sierra Leone, Finish Journalist Visits Awareness Times

The Editor for one of the leading Newspapers in Finland ‘Etela-Suomen Sanomat’ (ESS) Madam Erja Vainikka-Howard has landed on the shores of Sierra Leone on a two weeks journalists exchange programme organized by Plan Finland in collaboration with Plan Sierra Leone for both Finnish and African Journalists.

As part of her programme, Madam Vainikka-Howard who jetted into Sierra Leone in the late hours Monday 3rd May 2010, will be working with the Awareness Times Newspaper editorial team for four days commencing Tuesday 4th to Friday 7th May 2010. During this period, she will be assigned to some senior journalists of the Awareness Times on various attending coverages. As part of her exchange programme, Erja will be opportune to visit and hold interviews with top dignitaries in both the political, social, religious, and cultural arenas in Sierra Leone. Added to her visit, she is also expected to take tours to Sierra Leone’s most historic cites such as the beautiful, natural, and green leafed peninsular mountains, the beautiful beaches and natural harbors.

Already, on Tuesday 4th May 2010, Madam Vainikka-Howard visited and witnessed a Parliament sitting on the ratification of the ECOWAS Energy Protocol and the International Renewable Energy Agency Statute (IRENA) in the Sierra Leone House of Parliament. She also visited the Law Courts, the State House and the Sierra Leone Police Headquarters in Freetown, where she held a joint 45 minutes interview with the Director of Media and the Head of Communication in the Sierra Leone Police Superintendent Memunatu Bangura and Assistant Superintendent Ibrahim Samura respectively.

Today Wednesday 5th May 2010, Erja Vainikka-Howard is expected to engage some senior policy makers in Sierra Leone as she goes out on field work with an Awareness Times Journalist. This will be followed by a meeting with the membership of Women in the Media Sierra Leone, an association comprising of almost all female practicing journalist in Sierra Leone on Thursday 6th May. During this meeting, the visiting Editor is also scheduled to do a one hour power point presentation on Journalism in Finland.

On Saturday 8th May, madam Vainikka-Howard will be meeting a Finnish woman philanthropist who doubles as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) (UNDP) Director in West Africa Ms. Mia Seppo in Sierra Leone and on Sunday 9th May, Erja will be visiting some of the most beautiful beaches in Sierra Leone.
