The family and congregation of the Zion Methodist Church in central Freetown past Sunday celebrated the 92nd and 82nd birthdays of Professor Dr. Edward Wilmot Blyden III and his wife, Professor Dr. Amelia Elizabeth Blyden respectively.
The 92-years-old retired statesman, educator, diplomat, politician and national orator is the patriarch of the Blyden family of Sierra Leone and him and his 82-years-old Wife were honoured by the Church and family members and friends with a special thanksgiving on the theme "Honour thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long on the Earth."
The service attracted important personalities and educated elites including former students of the couple who were themselves now retired as well as politicians who claimed their inspiration from the political activism of Edward Blyden III.
Rev. E. Akibo-Jones, the Circuit Superintendent informed the congregation that the thanksgiving service coincided with Pentecost of the Power of the Holy Spirit and the disciples. He said some people demonstrate power in the best way and manner, whilst others misuse it and suppress the oppressed.
"Sometimes when politicians receive power, having persuaded the people to vote them in, they use the power only to benefit themselves." Revd Akibo-Jones said. He however lauded Professor Blyden for using the power of education and oratory to transform and inspire many both within and outside the shores of Sierra Leone.
In her delivery, one of the illustrious daughters of the aging couple who is the Communications Officer at UNFPA, Madam Isa Blyden, gave the biography of their parents from their educational successes to achievements in leadership not forgetting their philanthropist calling. The First Lesson in the Church was read out by Dr. Sylvia Olayinka Blyden, the Publisher of this newspaper.
