In Sierra Leone, 14-year-old boy drowns at Lumley

A 14-year-old school boy of the Amnet Primary School whose name was given as John Sankoh of Tarawally Drive, Malama drowned on Sunday 23rd May 2010 at about 11:00am while swimming. This was disclosed by the police media boss, ASP Samura yesterday at Police Headquarters in Freetown. He said according information the poor boy who was awaiting NPSE results went to refresh himself in the sea waters when he got drifted away by heavy waves.
ASP Samura informed that according to what he had gathered the remains of the deceased were later discovered floating the following day. The body has already been handed over to the parents by the police, he said
He took the opportunity to caution parents and guardians against allowing children below 18 years to go to the beach alone during occasions for such unforeseen disasters. "The police are always monitoring the beach to see that proper order is maintained," he said.
He assured that police would continue to monitor activities within the beach areas to prevent children from swimming far into the sea. He ended by admonishing the society to work with the police in order to minimize such occurrences.
