Chinese Railway Group Takes Over Wilkinson Road Project in Sierra Leone

The Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) on June 12th 2010 signed and handed over the widening of Wilkinson Road project to Chinese Company, China Railway Seventh Group Company Limited (CRSG) in an auspicious ceremony that took place at SLRA PWD Kissy Headquarters in Freetown.

Addressing the gathering the Road Asset Manager/ Chief Project Engineer of the Wilkinson Road Project Madam Memunatu Kumba Jalloh noted that the widening project starts from Lumley Police Station to the Congo Cross Bridge close to the Youyi Building with a length of 5.2KM and a width of about 7M which will upon completion provide a dual carriageway (two lanes in each direction) with a width 20.74M.

According to her each carriageway will have 3.66M width with 1.52M width rectangular drain and 0.92M sidewalk on both sides of the road. "Wilkinson road is one of the major roads in the Western Area with large traffic volume and frequent congestions which often causes heavy traffic," she said, for which she urged the company to do all they can to complete the road within the time limit. She also called on those whose properties are on the right of way to submit their necessary documents to them before the project commences to avoid problems.

Signing on behald of the Government of Sierra Leone, SLRA Director General Munda Rogers noted that the signing process is as a result of the hard work and determination by him and his team in developing the country in accordance with governmentís Agenda for Change. He therefore appealed to the CRSG Company to do their best to ensure that they work within the 12 month stipulated for the completion of the project, adding that Wilkinson Road is very much crucial in Freetown as vehicles frequently ply it. He revealed that as Sierra Leone approached its 50th anniversary come April 27th 2011 they want the road project to be completed before that time to serve as a land mark in the history of the country.

Speaking also was the Deputy Director General Addul Aziz Kamara who noted that such was not their first contract with the Chinese company, citing the construction of the Kenema-Bo Highway that was completed within time limit. "We hope the same time will be respected in the widening of the Wilkinson Road," he said, adding that the work ahead is very challenging with the public ready with comments. "We therefore once more advise the company to focus on their work and ensure that they do a standard work that will be appreciated by the general populace." He assured them of more contracts if they prove themselves in widening the road within the 12 months target.

To the public he advised to show understanding when once the work commences until it get complete and appealed to all to join hands together to ensure a fast tract of the project.

Speaking on behalf of China Railway Seventh Group Company Limited, (CRSG) Madam Xianomin Liu commended SLRA and the Government of Sierra Leone for awarding them such a challenging contract within the capital of Freetown. She said they were ready and determined to undertake the venture to prove to Sierra Leoneans that they can do it. "Today is a memorable day in our work life in Sierra Leone and hope the relationship between Sierra Leone and China will continue to grow from strength to strength." She promised on her companyís behalf to construct a modern style road that everybody will appreciate. "We are committed and have all the man power to complete the project on time."

In his closing remarks, the Chairman of SLRA Board of Directors Mr. Ahmed C Dumbuya stated that China Railway Seventh Group Company Limited (CRSG) have succeeded with the Bo-Kenema highway. He expressed hope that they would equally succeed in the widening the Wilkinson Road. He therefore appealed to the company to construct a modern road that will look like the roads in Shangai, China and on time as the government and the people of Sierra Leone are eager to see the completion of the widening of the Wilkinson road before Independence Day next year.
