Against the backdrop of the drive of President Ernest Koroma to promote the health sector in the country, the First Lady Sia Nyama Koroma together with Mrs. Ban, the wife of the United Nations Secretary-General, has yesterday 15th June 2010 undertaken a tour of the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (P.C.M.H) and the Ola During Childrenís Hospital in a bid to boost the initiative of the free health care service for mothers and young children that was recently launched in the country.

In his Welcome Address, the Head Gynaecologist at PCMH, Dr. Ibrahim Tholley told his visitors that the free medical service initiative will greatly help to reduce Sierra Leoneís appalling human index ratings. He assured Mrs. Koroma and Mrs. Ban that himself and his staff were in line with the vision to improve on the value of lives of the beneficiaries of the free health care. He however lamented at a shortage of staff, lack of transport facilities and lack of adequate space as some of the human elements obstructing the success of the free health care. He thus called for more assistance from donors.

In her brief address, Mrs. Sia Nyama Koroma assured doctors and the people of Sierra Leone that she will continue to support the initiative. She called on Donors, Citizens, Corporate and Civil organizations to also pitch in to support.

For her part, Mrs. Ban also assured Sierra Leoneans that she was impressed with the initiative and promised to keep Sierra Leoneís maternal and child mortality issues at the fore of her activities.
