8 year-old girl escapes circumcision


Local tabloids have intimated the escape of an eight-year-old girl from circumcision rites at Sumbuya Village in the Koya Chiefdom, Port Loko District from members of the traditional female secret society.  According to reports, the girl ran away and remained in hiding for about two weeks before resurfacing in another village called Rolal.  The initiation arrangement was said to have been secretly made by girls mother with the senior Sowei at Sumbuya called Ya Membui Kanu.


Commercial bike rider steals goat


A commercial bike rider, Lansana Turay and his friend Osman Mansaray were on Monday this week caught red-handed in an attempt to steal a goat at Kpetewoma in the Lugbu Chiefdom, Bo District. According to reports, the suspects were noticed by the goats owner at about 3.00 am as they ran after the creatures. As the owner shouted to alert the locals, Lansana Turay reportedly ran away leaving his friend behind who was manhandled and brought to the Sumbuya Police Station for further investigation.  Suspect was however reportedly released for falling ill in cell.


Teenage Boys remanded for stealing Mobile Phone


Reports say two teenager boys, Alpha Kamara and Abdul Karim Turay were on Wednesday remanded by Magistrate Henry Sandy of Freetown Magistrate Court No.1 for stealing a mobile phone.  The first accused, Alpha Kamara was charged with house-breaking and larceny while the second, Abdul Karim Turay was charged with receiving stolen goods.  The first accused according to reports on June 12 this year broke into the House of one Jamie Nguaje at 12 John Drive Wellington in Freetown and stole a mobile phone.


SLPP Candidates makes wave in the US


One of the aspiring flag bearers of the SLPP, Mr. Umaru Dumbuya is reportedly winning a lot of support and goodwill from SLPP members in Ohio State, in the USA. Mr. Dumbuya had earlier come to Sierra Leone and officially declared his intention to run for the partys Flagbearer position for the 2012 lections.  He had already reportedly met many people in Sierra Leone he including delegates in the Western Area to sell his candidature. 


ECOWAS Supports GST Implementation


The ECOWAS Commissioner for Customers, Trade, Industry and Mines, Mohamed B. Daramy who was former Minister of Trade and Industry in the erstwhile SLPP government on Tuesday presented a cheque for USD 113,945 to Vice President Sam Su-mana on behalf of ECOWAS as the regional bodys help towards the implementation of Gods and Services Tax (GST) in the country.  Reports say ECOWAS had signed an MOU with the government for the provision of technical and financial supports to NRA in line with the organisations objectives to strengthen sub-regional trade through the harmonization of common tariffs.


British National Trapped in Salone


It has been reported that a British National, John Steffen Little recently appeared before Magistrate Steven of Freetown Magistrate Court No.1 for illegally entering the country without any valid documents. According to the particulars of offence the accused was arrested on June 5th 2010 on the shores at Aberdeen onboard a boat called Cheyene. He was later whisked to the Congo Cross Police where he was subsequently charged to court and in custody. Little is reported to have pleaded guilty and the Magistrate slammed a fine of Le 5 Million verdict on six months imprisonment.


Fullahs complain Police


The Fullah ethnic group of Biriwa Chiefdom, Bombali District has reportedly forwarded police complaint to the Provincial Secretary North following unprovoked attack by some Limba youths on their cattle ranch at Kamasigie.  According to reports, since the attack was launched, police are playing negligence to bring perpetrators to book. The affected herdsmen have forwarded an official complaint against the police for handling the matter with trinity.


Mines officer kills illegal Miner


Mines monitory officer attached to the Barrie Chiefdom, Pujehun Michael Sinnah is alleged to have killed an individual believed to be an illicit miner in the same chiefdom. Sinnah is currently under intensive police investigation while awaiting trail.
