The Chairman of opposition Sierra Leone People Party, Mr. John Oponjo Benjamin in a press briefing on Wednesday 30th June 2010 at party headquarters in Freetown said the SLPP has no confidence in the reappointment of Dr. Christian Thorpe as NEC chairperson.

The chairman said the party remains aggrieved by the cancellation of most of SLPP strongholds’ polling stations in the 2007 presidential run-off election across the country. "Christian Thorpe cancelled most of the SLPP votes in there strongholds with the excuse that there were over voting," Chairman Benjamin said. He went on to say that when the appointment was on the table for NEC chairperson they called several people to give the position and at the end they arrived to choose Dr. Christian Thorpe because they believed that she would conduct the elections free and fair.

He said President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma’s reappointed of the woman as chairperson for NEC is totally opposed by the SLPP as according to him they have a court action against her. "If she actually conducted the 2007 elections fairly, all this should not have been done", he further lamented.

,He also said president Koroma did not have the right to sack JD Rogers, the former Central Bank Governor but a matter that was to be decided by Parliament. "This is what the APC of President Koroma is doing, and they are not listening to the opposition especially SLPP as they do what they want without consulting the opposition."

He referred to Bumbuna as fake as he urged members of the fourth estate to go to Bumbuna to make sure if it is working. "They are just lying and the people should be aware about the APC‘s lies, he concluded.
