In Sierra Leone, GAFSP Approves $50 million for Agriculture

Global Agriculture and Food Security Programme (GAFSP) has approved US $50 million (Fifty Million Dollars) in support of governmentís small Small-Holder Commercialization Programme (SCP). This was revealed to the press at the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security (MAFFS) Conference Room, Youyi Building in Freetown on Monday 12th July 2010. In his presentation, Minister Dr. Sam Sesay noted that Small-Holders Commercialization Programme is geared towards supporting small scale farmers to move from subsistence farming to commercial ventures through Farmer Based Organization nationwide by the cultivation of marketable commodities to add value to their farming exercises and to link them to markets. He thanked the EU, Irish Aid, FAO, ADB and IDB for funding the project. He used the opportunity to announce that Sierra Leone is one of the fist five countries to benefit from GAFSP funding.
Giving an overview of the project, SCP coordinator, Mr. Prince Kamara noted that the SCP investment plan has been subjected to a peer technical review and has been cleared by the AU (NEPAD), ECOWAS and other development partners.
Mr. Kamara revealed that the pilot programme is already underway and showing signs to be successful. He said the President has consented to launch the programme on 31st July 2010 in the agriculture-rich eastern Kenema district.
