A National Disgrace as Sierra Leone President violates Constitution!

Whilst the country is faced with the unsavoury situation of the “independent” Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) developing a mysterious “technical glitch” that makes it “impossible” for them to locate where the recording of last Saturday’s Inside the Media programme disappeared to, we are reproducing, from our archives, an article that was originally published in the first edition of Awareness Times that followed the Sept. 17, 2007 Elections Victory of President Koroma. It is obvious that we had hoped back then, that Dr. Christiana Thorpe and President Koroma would have read in between the lines and worked towards reconciling this country.

On the contrary, what we have had to endure is arrogance as President Ernest Bai Koroma openly violated several key sections of the National Constitution with impunity!

Sierra Leone’s Attorney-General Abdul F.Serry-Kamal Esq. is the Principal Legal Adviser to the Government so he should take some of the blame for President Koroma’s repeat violations of Sections 32(8) and 32(9) of the National Constitution of Sierra Leone AND Section 4 and Section 5 of the National Electoral Commission Act No.1 of 2002.

Attorney-General Serry Kamal
should also be blamed for not properly advising President Koroma who has proceeded to treat the implied expectations of Section 32(3) of the National Constitution with scant regard insofar as the expected respect from a democratic Head of State for the views of his politically opposed compatriots.

We have watched in dismay as President Koroma has acted unconstitutionally by ignoring several sections of the National Constitution to transform himself into a DICTATOR in this country; A Dictator who has abrogated to himself the authority to hire and fire Electoral Commissioners as and how he feels like doing so; contrary to the dictates of the Constitution which he swore to uphold as our President and Fountain of Honour.

And this, we submit is a National Disgrace.

The manner of removal of Daphne Olu-Williams as Electoral Commissioner, by President Koroma, contravenes Sections 32(8) and 32(9) of the Constitution and Sections 4 and 5 of the Electoral Commission Act and that it was allowed to happen is a National Disgrace.

The manner of removal of Edward Nyallay & Winston Minah as Electoral Commissioners, by President Koroma, contravenes Sections 32(8) and 32(9) of the Constitution and Sections 4 and 5 of the Electoral Commission Act and that they were allowed to happen is a National Disgrace.

The retention of Dr. Christiana Thorpe amidst the loud protestations of leaders of the main opposition political party and amidst the burning anger which her retention has caused within the hearts & minds of hundreds of thousands of Sierra Leoneans, is a National Disgrace and contravenes the implied expectations of Section32(3) of the National Constitution.

These unconstitutional actions of this President Koroma’s regime are a disgrace to our democracy! DISGRACEFUL!

Finally, ‘YOU’ can “lose” copies of broadcasts made over ‘independent’ SLBC but ‘YOU’ can not lose Truth!
