The leading mining company in Sierra Leone, African Minerals Plc. (AML) on 6th August 2010, has signed an Iron Ore Mining Lease Agreement with the Government of Sierra Leone. This was revealed in a press briefing held at the Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources Conference Room in Freetown. In his statement the Minister of Mines, Mineral Resources and Political Affairs Hon Alhaji Alpha Kanu stated that unlike Gold and Diamonds which can be smuggled out of the country, Iron Ore was a commodity that can be properly valued in numerical terms at the time of export. He hailed discovery of 10.5 Billion Tons of Iron Ore in Tonkolili by African Minerals which he described as a blessing that will see the country eventually realise upto 1.5billion dollars in annual revenue.

He further revealed that apart from two Jumbo Jets of equipments which have now landed in Freetown over the weekend, a Nine engine Locomotive Engine will arrive in the country two weeks from now.    Speaking on behalf of African Minerals, the Logistic Manager Mr. Musa Bangura informed that AML has employed thousands of Sierra Leoneans and will be joining hands with the Government to push the country forward.

Later that same evening, at a prestigious occasion launched by President Koroma at Country Lodge in Freetown, African Minerals donated a sum of US$500,000 to the countrys expected 50th Independence Anniversary Celebrations slated for next April 2011.
