In Sierra Leone, SLIEPA Ends Two-Day Validation Workshop

In keeping with their statutory mandate to promote investment and encourage domestic market growth in Sierra Leone’s agricultural commercialization to meet both regional and international standards, the Sierra Leone Investment and Export Promotion Agency (SLIEPA) in collaboration with line ministries and other stakeholders on Wednesday 11th August 2010 commenced a two-day sensitization and validation workshop at Mamba Point, Wilberforce in Freetown.

The workshop is geared towards creating room for the formalization of a national policy on Agriculture Marketing Information System. The importance of the national policy is to help SLEIPA access credible information that will woo more investors in to the country. It will also help commercial farmers to upgrade their agricultural products for the market.

Giving an outline of the sensitization forum during the opening session, SLIEPA’s Director of Export Development, Mr. Henry Yamba Kamara said its objective is to influence the formulation of a policy on information system that would be used to attract foreign investors, as according to him in spite of all the natural resources and agricultural products, Sierra Leone had not developed such policies to market its strategies to attract investors. He also furthered that as a proactive agency the policy would enhance their work by allowing the public to know how they operate as a state institution.

The deputy director Agricultural Statistics in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Mohamed Ajuba Sheriff in his presentation said they will be collaborating with Statistic-SL and the World Bank Project so as to be properly guided by International Principles to devise sustainable and competitive information system that will improve information flow on the agricultural system in Sierra Leone. He underscored the timeliness of the workshop as he put it ‘it would help the Ministry of Agriculture to develop the present poor agricultural commercialization status in the country as the agric sector is very sensitive.’

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade Mr. Marah assured their ministry’s support to put the system in place to help in the marketing aspect of agricultural products from the country.

In his presentation on the second day, SLIEPA IT consultant Prince Jusu Nallo informed that the Marketing Information System (MIS) will not only help market our mineral resources but also build our capacity to market other local products internationally thereby creating more room for development.

He assured that SLIEPA was building relationship with other experts and stakeholders to work with the policy procedure to ensure that operation of the MIS do not have negative impact on the functions of personnel. He ended by iterating that the system would bring about strategies to serve as the back bone behind the success of the MIS.
