A local Non Governmental Organization CORD Sierra Leone and partners with support from the United Nations Children’s Educational Fund (UNICEF) has on the 10th August 2010 celebrated Open Defecation Free in three chiefdoms within the Kenema district.
The celebration is as a result of the community led total sanitation project implemented in the three chiefdoms in a bid to promote sanitation for a healthy life.
In a statement that was delivered by the Executive Director of CORD Sierra Leone in one of the ODF Communities Alfred Sandi, he said that five chiefdoms in Small-Bo, five in Lower Bambara and seven in Nongowa chiefdoms were targeted and have been declared Open Defecation Free.

He added that the programme was made successful due to the active involvement of the people in the respective communities.
Alfred Sandi disclosed that Cord Sierra Leone is implementing CLTS Programme in far to reached communities in rural areas within Kenema District in order to mitigate the high prevalence of diseases in those areas that were targeted for the project.
The CORD Sierra Leone Executive Director praised its major donor UNICEF for it enormous support to the project and assured them of his organization’s commitment to the process of developing the country.

The town chief Musa Komeh of Sembehun Supiema village in the Lower Bambara chiefdom described the ODF celebration as timely adding the implementation of the CLTS programme by Cord Sierra Leone and UNICEF has helped them in reducing the spread of illnesses in the area. He thanked CORD SIERRA LOENE and UNICEF for extending the project in the chiefdom and encouraged other organizations to help in similar direction.
The Paramount Chief of Lower Bambara chiefdom P.C. Alimamy Moiwai Farma described the introduction of the project in his chiefdom as important and historic event especially when it is geared towards promoting health and its related consequences.

He applauded CORD Sierra Leone for providing guidance for the people to undertake the construction of latrines under the CLTS project that is aim at promoting a healthy life.
P.C Farma used the occasion to plea with the Government of Sierra Leone and other international Non Governmental Organizations operating in the country to help them improve on the appalling road network adding most feeder roads in the area are completely cutoff from the chiefdom headquarter towns thereby preventing people to access the area.
The celebration was done in done in the three targeted chiefdoms Small-Bo, Nongowa and Lower Bambara and was climaxed by a rich traditional and cultural performance.
