The Minister of Defence, Retired Captain Paolo Conteh has told newsmen that the former CDS, Major General Nelson Williams was due for retirement for which reason he was asked by his Excellency President Koroma to proceed on terminal leave. Nelson Williams took over from Brigadier-General Sam Mboma just after the 2007 elections that ushered in the APC government. In a press release issued from the Office of the President on Tuesday 24th August 2010, the former Chief of Defence Staff was relieved of his duty and effectively replaced by Brigadier Yirrah Koroma to be the new CDS pending parliamentary approval.
Brigadier Mohamed Alie Sesay formerly Assistant CDS, Support and Logistics, now replaces Brigadier S.O. Williams, formerly Commander Joint Force. The Minister also disclosed the appointment of the former Colonel and Brigade Commander of the 5th Infantry Brigade Daniel Yappo Sesay as the new brigadier.
The Minister commended the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff for his relentless, proactive and brave support he rendered during his tenure of office as (CDS). He on that note wished him well in all his undertakings and endeavors.
Speaking to the Press and gallant soldiers present, the outgoing CDS Nelson-Williams thanked President Koroma for having given him the opportunity to serve under his government as CDS. He advised the serving soldiers to be efficient in their duties and to perform their roles as soldiers.
“I have never involved in a coup whilst a serving soldier and I want to tell the active officers to allow the politicians to make their mistakes and correct them by themselves without any interference from army officers,” he stated. He said his appointment by the President at that time was never politically motivated. He ended by calling on soldiers to maintain a peaceful environment and solidarity among themselves.
After hugging his successor, Major-General R.Y. Koroma, the former CDS Nelson-Williams gave status report on the activities and achievement of the RSLAF from September 2007 to date.
