Honourable Dr. John Karefa-Smart
Honourable Dr. John Karefa-Smart, (shown in photograph), a towering national figure of legendary proportions, who is believed by his supporters as haven won the March 1996 Presidential Run-Off Elections but whom, in the interest of peaceful cohesion, decided not to challenge those 1996 results as announced, has passed away peacefully last night of August 26th 2010 at the Bintumani Hotel in Freetown where he had spent the last few weeks of his life being medically cared for. One of the trusted SLPP aides of the countryís first Prime Minister, Sir Milton Margai, it was the sidelining of Dr. Karefa-Smart as the expected successor to the late Prime Minister on the death of Milton Margai that is believed to have been one of the most significant catalytic points of this Nationís regional and tribal chasm that has plagued our politics.

Karefa-Smart was later jailed by the APCís President Stevens as a means of diminishing his political stature back¬† in the seventies but he was to return back into politics in the nineties with a still high popularity that shocked many.

The late Hon. Dr. Karefa-Smart, who was in his nineties, is reported to have passed away at precisely 20:25GMT, about five minutes after his dear wife, Revd. Rena Karefa-Smart conducted Episcopal prayers at his bedside. As he slowly but very peacefully passed away from time to eternity, the old man was reported to have been surrounded by Rosaline and Suzanne,  his daughters, as well as immediate family members like his younger brother, Frank Karefa-Smart.

Awareness Times newspaper joins in the National mourning for this loss of our dear and Great Statesman. The Karefa-Smart family and other State functionaries are expected to meet and make funeral arrangements befitting of a man of his stature. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.
