PRESS Release Concerning Closure of the LWF Sierra Leone Program

The Lutheran World Federation Department for World Service (LWF/DWS) has been operating a humanitarian and development aid program in Sierra Leone since 1999, at the invitation of and in close cooperation with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sierra Leone (ELCSL) and the Government of Sierra Leone.

Having completed over 10 years of humanitarian and development work with communities impacted by the civil war in Sierra Leone, LWF/DWS made the decision to close the LWF Sierra Leone program as of 30th June 2010. LWF/DWS has no ongoing activities or projects in Sierra Leone as of 1st July 2010.

The ELCSL, the Sierra Leone national member church of the Lutheran World Federation, continues its own program of development assistance to needy communities in Sierra Leone and the Lutheran World Federation will seek to support ELCSL in building their capacities in this development work.

The LWF/DWS is grateful for the contribution made by all Sierra Leonean staff and partners in carrying out its mission in Sierra Leone over the past decade.
