It has been revealed by the Minister of Information and Communications that the late Octogenarian and veteran politician, Dr. John Karefa Smart will be laid to rest on Sunday, 19th September instant at his home-town of Rotifunk.

Giving a brief homily of the late Independence Advocate, Minister Ibrahim Ben Kargbo said the country has lost a seasoned and patient politician who strove and fought for the attainment of independence for Sierra Leone and served as government Minister for several years. He said the late politician was the first Foreign Minister of the country and during his tenure worked very hard to establish the young Sierra Leone among the community of nations. The late Karefa Smart was the founder of the United National Peoples Party (UNPP) and contested the 1996 election which saw the dawn of multi party politics in the country, but lost narrowly to his challenger, Alhaji Dr. Ahmed Tejan Kabbah of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP). Due to ill health he could not properly contest the 2002 elections with his usual vigor and has been living in the United States until his return recently.

According to Minister Kargbo, the late man will be given a State Funeral. The funeral programme will include a vigil at the UMC Church and a Book of Condolence will be opened the following morning. The actual place where he will be interned is not yet fully acknowledged.
