The government of Sierra Leone is said to have strengthened its commitment to the forthcoming Miss ECOWAS 2010 to be hosted in Sierra Leone in November this year according to the Salonejamboree an online arts and entertainment website. Sources at the Ministry of Tourism and Culture told salonejamboree that a special planning committee has been set up for the event, which the government sees as a unique opportunity to showcase the beauties and potentials of the country.

The event usually attracts West African policy makers including Presidents, Ministers of Government and ECOWAS top brass as well as international and local artists.

Each of the 15 West African countries is expected to send in two representatives, making the total number of contestants to 30. Most countries, including Ghana and Nigeria, have already held their internal auditions and have selected their candidates. Sierra Leone, the host country for the 2010 event, held an initial audition in July this year and two out of nine contestants were selected. The two are Margaret Murray- who fashions for emerging local style house Madam Wokie, and Stella Bangura- who represented Sierra Leone at the Miss University 2010 in Nigeria in mid year.

They will be joined by three more candidates to be selected from an audition scheduled for this Saturday (18th September) at Taia Resort Hotel, Lumley Beach, Aberdeen, Freetown, at 9am prompt. Eventually, the five candidates will go through a final session of trials to get the best two. According to the Head of Publicity for the local Planning Committee set up by government, Abubakarr Kanu, ladies who wish to take part in the audition on Saturday must have any form of identification as a Sierra Leonean and must come with two passport size photos and a full size personal photograph. Apart from that, the audition is free and is open to all Sierra Leoneans. We want to give every eligible Sierra Leonean lady the opportunity to have a try, said Kanu, who also manages popular FM station Kalleone Radio.

The official launching of the Miss ECOWAS Beauty Pageant 2010 will take place October 7th at the Taia Hotel and the main show on November 13th at the Miatta Conference Terrace, Youyi Building, Brookfields, Freetown.

Meanwhile, representatives of the official event managers, Ghanaian based 702 Productions Ltd., are expected in Freetown on Friday in time for the audition.
