Hajj Visas Issued in Freetown

 

Local tabloids have disclosed the arrival of two officials of the Bureau of Consular Section in the foreign ministry for the issuance of 2010 Hajj visas to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. According to reports, Messrs Abdulaziz Bin Mohamed Al-Hassan and Abdulaziy Bin Meshal Al Harbi were sent by Saudi Arabian authorities to issue visa to prospective Muslims to perform the pilgrimage. Reports say the Ministry of Hajj applicants must have a passport with a validity of at least six months and it should have at least two empty visa papers adjacent to it.


FCC Bans Night Trading


The Freetown City Council in collaboration with the Traders Union, Religious Leaders and Tribal Heads has reportedly slammed a ban on night trading within the municipality. According to reports, all wares are supposed to be packed out of the streets latest 9:00pm each night. The decision was reportedly taken last Tuesday in a stakeholders’ meeting. A committee has however, been reportedly set up to conduct a month long sensitization of petty traders before the ban comes into effect.


Kenema District Council to Construct School


The chairman of the Kenema District Council, Patrick Samu has reportedly turned the sod for the construction of three classroom buildings at Waima, Helebu and Torkpombu villages respectively within  the Small Bo Chiefdom. According to him the funds to construct the schools are directly from the council as subvention for development of education in the district. He also informed that the development is going to be replicated in other parts of the district.


Drivers’ Union Accuses Police of Harassment

 

Local tabloids say the motor driver and general traders union on Tuesday accused police of harassment and corruption while controlling traffic in Freetown. According to the union president Alhaji Abubakarr Fofanah, there is no space for drivers to operate freely in Freetown due to street trading. He reportedly informed that traffic police are always in the habit of giving traffic violation tickets to drivers without informing them of the crimes committed. The union president has reportedly called on the government and other stakeholders to come to their aid.


Step Father Beats 3 Months’ Old Son to Death

 

Musa Koroma of Solima Village in the Pujehun District is presently being hunted by the police and community members over an allegation of beating his three months’ old step son, Ibrahim Sesay to death on Tuesday 11th October 2010. According to police reports the mother of the child, Asmatu Sesay was away when her husband manhandled her three months’ old son and beat him. Asmatu and one Samba she took along to the police to make the report are also presently under police custody helping in their investigation.


NGO Targets Traditional Harmful Practices

 

A Non-Governmental Organization, Amazonian Initiatives Movement has over the weekend engaged stakeholders on harmful traditional practices in five chiefdoms in the Port Loko District. According to reports the aim of the meeting was to raise awareness on the effects of those harmful traditional practices as well as women and child rights issues. Report say harmful traditional practices are very common in most parts of the rural areas.


Expired beer out for sale

 

Local tabloids have alleged the selling of two expired imported beer in the Freetown city. The expired beers are Kingfisher and Ledds. No action has yet been taken by authorities of import and consumer promotion agency to track down the importers of those expired items that threaten to pose health hazard.


Rapist Police Sergeant on the Run

 

Report from Mile 91 in the Tonkolili District says a police sergeant has escaped from cell after being held for alleged rape. According to report Sgt 5310 Augustine Aiah was allegedly accused of having unlawful carnal knowledge with a -12- year old girl. The matter is till under investigation


Fake Doctor Arrested for Killing 3-Month-Old Baby


A fake Doctor named Peter Monrovia aged 23 of Mandu Town in the Valunia Chiefdom Bo District is presently in police net helping in their investigations for allegedly administering wrong injection to a –three- month old baby resulting to his death. According to police sources, the fake doctor knowingly administered the wrong injection to the deceased who was said to be suffering from common cold.
